Tasks of IN

Institute for nutrition is a research and consultancy institute for animal nutrition. It is focused on research and implementation of nutritional knowledge into animal production. The research is aimed at proper feeding of agricultural livestock and at significant impact of animal nutrition on quality and safety of animal products. Special emphasis is paid to secondary effects of feed composition on digestion, metabolism and health of polygastric, monogastric, and laboratory animals, and hoofed game. One of the competences of the Institute for nutrition are studies with model animals (pig, rat) on the metabolism of nutrients, and on the effect of functional food additives on body; the results to be applied for humans.

Research activities of the institute are focused on improvement of the nutritive value of feedstuffs through treatment (chemical and thermal), nutritional evaluation of feeds, local forage, crop residues and low grade industrial by-products, efficient and economical ration formulations.

Precise feeding increases efficiency of expended costs for feeds in relation to production; the rural development is supported as well. Excretion of matters with negative impact on environment also decreases. 


Scientific and research priorities of the institute

● Physiology of digestion in animals (ruminants, pigs, rabbits, hoofed game, rats)

● Nutritional need of animals

● Methods in vitro, in vivo, in sacco and mobile bag methods are used to study nutritional value of feeds, properties, digestion, utilisation and transformation of nutrients in individual parts of the digestive tract

● Influence of feed treatment on conversion of nutrients

● Optimisation of composition of feed rations and mixtures to consider real needs of animals; minimisation of content of undesirable and anti-nutritive matters; utilisation of probiotic, stimulating and biologically effective matters

● Effective utilisation of traditional and alternative feed resources, inclusive of waste and secondary raw materials from industry, for cattle, hoofed game and other ruminants, pigs, rabbits and laboratory model animals

● Properly adjusted nutrition in relation to production, economy; reduction of excretion of nitrogen, phosphorus and other harmful matters

● Control of feed quality

● Complex of rearing conditions in hoofed game (farms, game preserves, free hunting areas)

● Study of problems in production, storage, conservation and treatment of roughage using effective conservation preparations of chemical and biological origin aimed at control of fermentation process during ensilaging, elimination of losses by secondary fermentation and improvement of hygienic quality of feeds
