Institute for Farm Animal Genetics and Reproduction

Institute for Genetics and Reproduction of Farm Animals, SARC Nitra is engaged in basic and applied research in the sphere of biotechnologies of farm animals and in application of methods of molecular biology, gene engineering and embryo-technologies in animal production for a long time.

The Department is also directed at research and implementation of results in the sphere of assisted reproduction and endocrinology with emphasis on oogenesis, folliculogenesis and embryogenesis in farm animals. Further range of activities is protection and utilization of genetic resources of native farm animal species and top gene pool.

Priorities in the scientific and research activities of the institute:

  • DNA tests of selected genetic markers in relation to quality and production of milk, meat, reproduction properties and state of health in farm animals with the aim to select the individuals.
  • Creation, analysis and utilization of genetically modified (transgenic) animals to produce recombinant substances and improve performance of animals.
  • Freezing of spermatozoa and embryos of farm animals and genetically modified animals with the aim to create a gene bank.
  • Quality assessment in spermatozoa and embryos of farm animals and genetically modified animals.
  • Research and application of hormones and growth factors in regulation of farm animals’ reproduction.
  • Development of techniques in controlled reproduction of farm animals.<
